PACER vs the beep test

Same gym, same 20 metres, different number on the slip you take home.

Updated 6 Sept 2026

If you went to school in the United States, you probably ran the PACER. If you played club sport in the UK, Australia, or New Zealand, someone handed you a “bleep test” or a “beep test.”

From the side of the gym they look like the same drill. Two lines. A soundtrack that gets less friendly. A lot of turning. The number you take home is not the same thing.

Same family

Both sit under the multi-stage fitness test that Léger and colleagues popularised: run 20 metres, make the beep, run back, survive the next speed.

That is why people mash the names together. FitnessGram’s PACER, the UK bleep test, the Australian beep test, “20m shuttle run,” “MSFT” — they are cousins. They are not one protocol with a translator.

The score is the real split

PACER, in the form most US PE classes use, is counted in laps. You keep going until you miss the line twice, and the slip says 41, or 62, or whatever you reached. Some teachers still talk about “levels,” but the official-looking number is usually the lap count.

Club beep tests — and most bleep-test tapes — want level and shuttle. 9.6. 11.2. Beep test levels explains that notation.

You cannot honestly say “62 PACER laps equals level 12.” Maybe a chart on a forum says you can. Cadence, the exact miss rule, and whether anyone used a 15m gym all get in the way. If a coach asks for a beep-test score, run a beep test. If the grade book wants PACER laps, run PACER.

15 metres is not a rounding error

A lot of school gyms cannot fit a clean 20m. FitnessGram has a 15m PACER for that reason.

It is still a shuttle test. It is not the 20m beep test a soccer club means in July. Shorter lane, different cadence, different score. If you trained in a hallway at 15m and then walked into a 20m trial, the first turn will feel late.

Measure the lane you will be tested on. How the 20m test is set up is the boring version of that advice, and it is the one people skip.

Who asks for which

Rough map, with the usual exceptions:

  • US schools: PACER / FitnessGram, laps, sometimes a 15m gym.
  • UK schools and a lot of UK sport: bleep test, level.shuttle.
  • Australia, New Zealand, and a lot of club sport worldwide: beep test, same idea as the bleep test.
  • Labs and papers: multi-stage fitness test, Léger, MSFT.

If your coach grew up in one system and your school uses the other, they may think they are asking for the same homework. They are not.

Training for the one you will sit

The fitness you build transfers. The rhythm does not, not completely. Turns, how long you wait on the line, and how you pace the first four levels are specific.

So pick the audio you will actually hear on the day. If that is a school PACER track, use that. If it is a club beep tape, use that. BeepRun is built around the 20m beep / bleep protocol: timed cues, shuttle and level counts, an Estimated VO2max after the run. It will not turn itself into a licensed FitnessGram session, and it should not pretend to.

Estimated VO2max, on any of these tests, is still an estimate. Age-sex charts are still reference values. None of this is a medical test.

If you only remember one thing: ask what number they want — laps, or level.shuttle — and how long the lane is. Then run that. The cousin can wait.

Quick answers

Is the PACER the same as the beep test?

They are in the same family: a 20m multi-stage shuttle run to audio. PACER, used in a lot of US PE, is usually scored in laps. The beep or bleep test used by clubs is usually scored as level and shuttle.

Can I convert PACER laps to a beep test level?

Not cleanly. Cadence, cut-off rules, and sometimes the lane length differ. A conversion chart is a guess. If the test is official, train and report in that test’s units.

Is there a 15m PACER?

Yes. Some gyms use a 15m PACER when 20m will not fit. That is not a 20m beep test, and the scores do not match.
